It is now clear that one of the last liv\u00ading reg\u00adgae icons has come back to stay \u2013 at least as long as his health allows. And judg\u00ading by his per\u00adfor\u00admances, he is in top form and in the best of spir\u00adits. Both of these qual\u00adi\u00adties also char\u00adac\u00adterise his first album in over 15 years. David Katz spoke to the usu\u00adal\u00adly tac\u00adi\u00adturn and moody Burn\u00ading Spear about \u201dNo Destroy\u00ader,\u201d some of the high\u00adlights of his career and his plans for the future.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-163912b4bfdedd7cde988eca2e2193cc\"><strong>Text: <a href=\"https:\/\/riddim.world\/mystaging01\/tag\/david-katz\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"148\">David Katz<\/a> \/\/\/ Pho\u00adtos: <a href=\"https:\/\/riddim.world\/mystaging01\/tag\/lee-abel\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"1515\">Lee Abel<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\">\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>This arti\u00adcle was first pub\u00adlished in Sep\u00adtem\u00adber 2023 (RIDDIM 04\/2023).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\">\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6d4b44f9394fc1aeee63b2b545cf9368\">\n  On the oth\u00ader end of a trans-Atlantic phone line, Burn\u00ading Spear begins a sung bene\u00addic\u00adtion, prais\u00ading Rasta\u00adfari in qua\u00adver\u00ading vibra\u00adto. \u201dAs far as I can see, every\u00adthing is alright with me,\u201d he offers, shift\u00ading up an octave to defend Mar\u00adcus Gar\u00advey, the Jamaican hero of black self-deter\u00admi\u00adna\u00adtion he has con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly ven\u00ader\u00adat\u00aded. \u201dMar\u00adcus Gar\u00advey has been accused many times wrong\u00adful\u00adly, we need his name to clean up and set his record free\u2026free\u2026free\u2026!\u201d\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-23620aa2cbe203dbc4c8c8081d606be3\">With laugh\u00adter in his voice and an unusu\u00adal\u00adly relaxed play\u00adful\u00adness, Spear is obvi\u00adous\u00adly in bright spir\u00adits. For many years he has large\u00adly absent\u00aded him\u00adself from the reg\u00adgae sphere, emerg\u00ading from his some\u00adwhat remote New York home\u00adbase for only a hand\u00adful of live shows, typ\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly staged in the USA; there were also times when he engaged in bouts of seem\u00ading\u00adly self-destruc\u00adtive online trolling, blast\u00ading vir\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly every\u00adone he\u2019s ever worked with via ran\u00addom posts that verged on the extreme. Then, last sum\u00admer Euro\u00adpean audi\u00adences were unex\u00adpect\u00aded\u00adly treat\u00aded to sev\u00ader\u00adal high-pro\u00adfile per\u00adfor\u00admances, the first in many moons, which saw our hero in fine form, despite advanc\u00ading age. And as Spear pre\u00adpares to return the favour this sum\u00admer at select fes\u00adti\u00advals and venues, fans will final\u00adly be able to embrace the long-await\u00aded arrival of \u201dNo Destroy\u00ader,\u201d the first new Burn\u00ading Spear stu\u00addio album in over 15 years. \u201dWe\u2019re not rush\u00ading any\u00adthing cause I don\u2019t think it\u2019s wise,\u201d says Spear of the new LP. \u201dThe time got to be right for me, and then again, the time will always be right for the peo\u00adple, for they are the ones who sup\u00adport me, and they\u2019re always look\u00ading for\u00adward to see\u00ading some\u00adthing com\u00ading from Burn\u00ading Spear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a7d64bb4b615f1852719e5f47a06df26\">\u201dNo Destroy\u00ader\u201d is anoth\u00ader great instal\u00adment in Burn\u00ading Spear\u2019s incred\u00adi\u00adble cat\u00ada\u00adlogue, which encom\u00adpass\u00ades at least 22 orig\u00adi\u00adnal stu\u00addio albums, not count\u00ading the many vol\u00adumes of the \u201dLiv\u00ading Dub\u201d com\u00adpan\u00adion series, and com\u00adpi\u00adla\u00adtions. And I\u2019m pleased to say that the end result is worth the wait. Mix\u00ading deeply per\u00adson\u00adal state\u00adments with songs that implore human\u00adi\u00adty to do bet\u00adter, prais\u00ading reggae\u2019s ever\u00adlast\u00ading qual\u00adi\u00adties along\u00adside appraisals of his own career, \u201dNo Destroy\u00ader\u201d bears the hall\u00admarks of high pro\u00adduc\u00adtion val\u00adues and prop\u00ader musi\u00adcian\u00adship that have always been present from the start, with a well-round\u00aded horn sec\u00adtion, bluesy gui\u00adtar accom\u00adpa\u00adni\u00adment and under\u00adstat\u00aded female har\u00admo\u00adny vocals giv\u00ading sub\u00adtle embell\u00adish\u00adments to Spear\u2019s force\u00adful lead. On the title track, Spear reminds that he\u2019s seek\u00ading no fame at this point, being more con\u00adcerned with sym\u00adbol\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly refut\u00ading any neg\u00ada\u00adtive destroy\u00ader that might seek to nul\u00adli\u00adfy his nat\u00adur\u00adal blooms; \u201dInde\u00adpen\u00addent\u201d high\u00adlights that Burn\u00ading Spear has always fol\u00adlowed the beat of his own drum and despite attempts to sab\u00ado\u00adtage, he con\u00adtin\u00adues to move for\u00adward; indus\u00adtry sharks are also berat\u00aded on \u201dTalk,\u201d \u201dNo Fool\u201d and \u201dThey Think,\u201d but the album cel\u00ade\u00adbrates reg\u00adgae music\u2019s pos\u00adi\u00adtive sides too. Indeed, on the upbeat \u201dOpen The Gate,\u201d Spear per\u00adson\u00adal\u00adly thanks Chris Black\u00adwell of Island Records and Clement Dodd of Stu\u00addio One for bring\u00ading reg\u00adgae music to the world, along with Robert Nes\u00adta Mar\u00adley, Alton Ellis, Cul\u00adture, Den\u00adnis Brown and oth\u00ader pio\u00adneer\u00ading fig\u00adures. \u201dJamaica\u201d points to the endur\u00ading qual\u00adi\u00adties of roots reg\u00adgae and \u201dObses\u00adsion\u201d salutes var\u00adi\u00adous branch\u00ades of the Rasta\u00adfari faith while remind\u00ading of the need for tak\u00ading per\u00adson\u00adal respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty for one\u2019s beliefs, all deliv\u00adered in poet\u00adic lan\u00adguage atop a rhythm that would not be out of place on a Steel Pulse album, which morphs into a lengthy dub work\u00adout. Mov\u00ading to the more gen\u00ader\u00adal, Spear implores sci\u00aden\u00adtists to make med\u00adical break\u00adthroughs on the opti\u00admistic \u201dCure For Can\u00adcer,\u201d sings the prais\u00ades of Jamaica\u2019s north\u00adwest par\u00adty town on \u201dNegril\u201d and on the heart\u00adfelt sin\u00adgle \u201dMom\u00admy,\u201d he details a family\u2019s strug\u00adgle to per\u00adse\u00advere in the face of the grave hard\u00adships of our con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adrary present, named by Spear as among the album\u2019s most per\u00adti\u00adnent works. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-549e29043192a68f1fb2f702995de848\">\n  \u201dIt\u2019s a strong song deal\u00ading with the fam\u00adi\u00adlies, bas\u00ading upon the Coro\u00adn\u00adavirus, but this song been record\u00aded way before,\u201d Spear empha\u00adsis\u00ades. \u201dWhat I\u2019m say\u00ading is that things is not gonna be the same as before; here comes the Coro\u00adna and hun\u00addreds and thou\u00adsands of peo\u00adple nev\u00ader get that call back to their jobs and they are nev\u00ader gonna get that call. So it\u2019s more like a sto\u00adry for par\u00adents to sit their kids down and tell them about what hap\u00adpened after the Coro\u00adna: here comes dad\u00addy, he\u2019s on the move look\u00ading some\u00adthing to do, and mommy\u2019s at home just hop\u00ading that dad\u00addy will come through with some food so they will able to pro\u00adlong with their lives and take care of their fam\u00adi\u00adly. Hav\u00ading kick-start\u00aded the roots reg\u00adgae sub\u00adgenre at Stu\u00addio One in 1969, he achieved inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal acclaim in the mid-1970s through a series of hard-hit\u00adting albums that rank amongst reggae\u2019s all-time great\u00adest, his stal\u00adwart posi\u00adtion main\u00adtained through qual\u00adi\u00adty releas\u00ades and spo\u00adradic tours char\u00adac\u00adterised by marathon per\u00adfor\u00admances with superb musi\u00adcal back\u00ading, but keep\u00ading up the momen\u00adtum has inevitably become more dif\u00adfi\u00adcult with the pass\u00ading of time. \u201dIt\u2019s not some\u00adthing I always want to do, but it\u2019s all about the peo\u00adple,\u201d says Spear, with a slight stam\u00admer. \u201dThe peo\u00adple are always request\u00ading me, and I know that the peo\u00adple come first.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4963186e3d9651000e8aa857db03bd53\">Born Win\u00adston Rod\u00adney in 1945 in St Ann\u2019s Bay, a size\u00adable fish\u00ading port on Jamaica\u2019s north coast that is the cap\u00adi\u00adtal of St Ann\u2019s parish, Burn\u00ading Spear sees him\u00adself as part of a trin\u00adi\u00adty of local heroes, togeth\u00ader with Mar\u00adcus Gar\u00advey and Bob Mar\u00adley. \u201dI\u2011man were born at 12 King Street, off Mar\u00adket Street, which was where Mar\u00adcus Gar\u00advey were born, and Bob also was from the same parish, so it\u2019s the three of us as one,\u201d he empha\u00adsis\u00ades. \u201dGrow\u00ading up, I had four broth\u00aders and eight sis\u00adters, so it\u2019s a huge fam\u00adi\u00adly, and I most like\u00adly be the sec\u00adond youngest. My home life is just like any oth\u00ader home life, where you have to obey your par\u00adents; my mom was a cook and my father do road con\u00adstruc\u00adtion and my par\u00adents was Pen\u00adte\u00adcostal, so I had to go to church two times for the day \u2014 you ain\u2019t chick\u00aden\u00ading out on that!\u201d Young Win\u00adston focussed on sports at school, until music infil\u00adtrat\u00aded his con\u00adscious\u00adness. \u201dAt St Ann\u2019s Pri\u00adma\u00adry, I was pret\u00adty hap\u00adpy as a young per\u00adson because soc\u00adcer and swim\u00adming and run\u00adning was my main hob\u00adbies. So grow\u00ading up, I wasn\u2019t think\u00ading about music or try\u00ading to sing. It hap\u00adpened by lis\u00adten\u00ading to oth\u00ader artists who were work\u00ading many years before me.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b3284f61b312a96d24331aa63079fbee\"><strong>\u201dI was lis\u00adten\u00ading to the real hard\u00adcore, I wasn\u2019t lis\u00adten\u00ading to the fan\u00adcy side of reg\u00adgae music. And one of my main peo\u00adple who I was lis\u00adten\u00ading to is Bob; I would lis\u00adten to every one of Bob\u2019s songs.\u201d<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-651457440af141f0b014895daf9cd02e\">Cur\u00adtis May\u00adfield and James Brown were among the for\u00adeign singers who inspired him, but local stars made greater impact as the fledgeling Jamaican music indus\u00adtry solid\u00adi\u00adfied. \u201dI start\u00aded to feel this music from the late-\u201950s into the ear\u00adly \u201960s, and this music\u2019s com\u00ading from a dis\u00adtance, cause it was men\u00adto, ska, rock steady, all those changes the music came through, and it\u2019s the same music that turn itself into reg\u00adgae. Jamaica had so much musi\u00adcians, like there was the great trom\u00adbone play\u00ader, Don Drum\u00admond, the gui\u00adtarist Ernest Ran\u00adglin, and there was some great peo\u00adple out there who were singing, like the Hep\u00adtones, Lar\u00adry Mar\u00adshall, Peter Tosh, Alton Ellis. All those brethren were there before I\u2011man, so I was lis\u00adten\u00ading to the real hard\u00adcore, I wasn\u2019t lis\u00adten\u00ading to the fan\u00adcy side of reg\u00adgae music. And one of my main peo\u00adple who I was lis\u00adten\u00ading to is Bob; I would lis\u00adten to every one of Bob\u2019s songs.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2f8dc82b0f3590d15c28b1fe429eab12\">When Win\u00adston Rod\u00adney came of age, he worked var\u00adi\u00adous menial jobs to make ends meet while broad\u00aden\u00ading his mind through dis\u00adcus\u00adsions with elders, who told him of Garvey\u2019s vision\u00adary qual\u00adi\u00adties and the pio\u00adneer\u00ading cam\u00adpaigns for black bet\u00adter\u00adment. Ulti\u00admate\u00adly, the spir\u00adi\u00adtu\u00adal awak\u00aden\u00ading that point\u00aded him in a dif\u00adfer\u00adent direc\u00adtion came through mys\u00adti\u00adcal won\u00adders, expe\u00adri\u00adenced at a local beach. \u201dI used to do dry clean\u00ading, car wash\u00ading and tiling, but here comes as Jah wish, for me to be a musi\u00adcian or an artist, and that is it,\u201d he says, defin\u00adi\u00adtive\u00adly. \u201dI was on Key Largo Beach, near where Mar\u00adcus Gar\u00advey used to be locat\u00aded at 1 Jail Lane, and that\u2019s where every\u00adthing start to hap\u00adpen: I\u2011man start to see my roots, my cul\u00adture, my his\u00adto\u00adry, where I\u2019m com\u00ading from orig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly, my peo\u00adple before me and my great-grandfather\u2019s\u2011father\u2019s\u2011father, so that\u2019s where I say \u2018Rasta\u00adfari\u2019 for the first time, that\u2019s where I grow my dreads. The aware\u00adness come to I\u2011man based upon my ener\u00adgy, for you\u2019ve got to be open think\u00ading, and the ener\u00adgy just came right there on the beach, and I don\u2019t even know where the lyrics came from, but the lyrics did come. And after a while, here comes melodies, so I sing it and I do the best I could with it. Lyrics or melodies is not some\u00adthing you real\u00adly look for, and when it comes you\u2019ve got to accept it and store it.
