Last year, his con\u00adcerts were still thought to be a once-in-a-life\u00adtime oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty. It is now clear that one of the last liv\u00ading reg\u00adgae icons has come back to stay \u2013 at least as long as his health allows. And judg\u00ading by his per\u00adfor\u00admances, he is in top form and in the best of spir\u00adits. Both of these qual\u00adi\u00adties also char\u00adac\u00adterise his first album in over 15 years. David Katz spoke to the usu\u00adal\u00adly tac\u00adi\u00adturn and moody Burn\u00ading Spear about \u201dNo Destroy\u00ader,\u201d some of the high\u00adlights of his career and his plans for the future.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n On the oth\u00ader end of a trans-Atlantic phone line, Burn\u00ading Spear begins a sung bene\u00addic\u00adtion, prais\u00ading Rasta\u00adfari in qua\u00adver\u00ading vibra\u00adto. \u201dAs far as I can see, every\u00adthing is alright with me,\u201d he offers, shift\u00ading up an octave to defend Mar\u00adcus Gar\u00advey, the Jamaican hero of black self-deter\u00admi\u00adna\u00adtion he has con\u00adtin\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly ven\u00ader\u00adat\u00aded. \u201dMar\u00adcus Gar\u00advey has been accused many times wrong\u00adful\u00adly, we need his name to clean up and set his record free\u2026free\u2026free\u2026!\u201d\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With laugh\u00adter in his voice and an unusu\u00adal\u00adly relaxed play\u00adful\u00adness, Spear is obvi\u00adous\u00adly in bright spir\u00adits. For many years he has large\u00adly absent\u00aded him\u00adself from the reg\u00adgae sphere, emerg\u00ading from his some\u00adwhat remote New York home\u00adbase for only a hand\u00adful of live shows, typ\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly staged in the USA; there were also times when he engaged in bouts of seem\u00ading\u00adly self-destruc\u00adtive online trolling, blast\u00ading vir\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly every\u00adone he\u2019s ever worked with via ran\u00addom posts that verged on the extreme. Then, last sum\u00admer Euro\u00adpean audi\u00adences were unex\u00adpect\u00aded\u00adly treat\u00aded to sev\u00ader\u00adal high-pro\u00adfile per\u00adfor\u00admances, the first in many moons, which saw our hero in fine form, despite advanc\u00ading age. And as Spear pre\u00adpares to return the favour this sum\u00admer at select fes\u00adti\u00advals and venues, fans will final\u00adly be able to embrace the long-await\u00aded arrival of \u201dNo Destroy\u00ader,\u201d the first new Burn\u00ading Spear stu\u00addio album in over 15 years. \u201dWe\u2019re not rush\u00ading any\u00adthing cause I don\u2019t think it\u2019s wise,\u201d says Spear of the new LP. \u201dThe time got to be right for me, and then again, the time will always be right for the peo\u00adple, for they are the ones who sup\u00adport me, and they\u2019re always look\u00ading for\u00adward to see\u00ading some\u00adthing com\u00ading from Burn\u00ading Spear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dNo Destroy\u00ader\u201d is anoth\u00ader great instal\u00adment in Burn\u00ading Spear\u2019s incred\u00adi\u00adble cat\u00ada\u00adlogue, which encom\u00adpass\u00ades at least 22 orig\u00adi\u00adnal stu\u00addio albums, not count\u00ading the many vol\u00adumes of the \u201dLiv\u00ading Dub\u201d com\u00adpan\u00adion series, and com\u00adpi\u00adla\u00adtions. And I\u2019m pleased to say that the end result is worth the wait. Mix\u00ading deeply per\u00adson\u00adal state\u00adments with songs that implore human\u00adi\u00adty to do bet\u00adter, prais\u00ading reggae\u2019s ever\u00adlast\u00ading qual\u00adi\u00adties along\u00adside appraisals of his own career, \u201dNo Destroy\u00ader\u201d bears the hall\u00admarks of high pro\u00adduc\u00adtion val\u00adues and prop\u00ader musi\u00adcian\u00adship that have always been present from the start, with a well-round\u00aded horn sec\u00adtion, bluesy gui\u00adtar accom\u00adpa\u00adni\u00adment and under\u00adstat\u00aded female har\u00admo\u00adny vocals giv\u00ading sub\u00adtle embell\u00adish\u00adments to Spear\u2019s force\u00adful lead. It\u2019s a sound that is thor\u00adough\u00adly con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adrary, build\u00ading on the clas\u00adsics of the past with\u00adout aim\u00ading for some\u00adthing \u201dretro.\u201d<\/p>

Open\u00ading num\u00adber \u201dThe Spear\u201d sets the tone with a brief sur\u00advey of what Spear is all about: con\u00adcerned with pro\u00admot\u00ading peace and love instead of an ego trip, he\u2019s the reg\u00adgae fig\u00adure\u00adhead that takes his time, impart\u00ading his mes\u00adsage in good faith and with\u00adout com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adtion. On the title track, Spear reminds that he\u2019s seek\u00ading no fame at this point, being more con\u00adcerned with sym\u00adbol\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly refut\u00ading any neg\u00ada\u00adtive destroy\u00ader that might seek to nul\u00adli\u00adfy his nat\u00adur\u00adal blooms; \u201dInde\u00adpen\u00addent\u201d high\u00adlights that Burn\u00ading Spear has always fol\u00adlowed the beat of his own drum and despite attempts to sab\u00ado\u00adtage, he con\u00adtin\u00adues to move for\u00adward; indus\u00adtry sharks are also berat\u00aded on \u201dTalk,\u201d \u201dNo Fool\u201d and \u201dThey Think,\u201d but the album cel\u00ade\u00adbrates reg\u00adgae music\u2019s pos\u00adi\u00adtive sides too. Indeed, on the upbeat \u201dOpen The Gate,\u201d Spear per\u00adson\u00adal\u00adly thanks Chris Black\u00adwell of Island Records and Clement Dodd of Stu\u00addio One for bring\u00ading reg\u00adgae music to the world, along with Robert Nes\u00adta Mar\u00adley, Alton Ellis, Cul\u00adture, Den\u00adnis Brown and oth\u00ader pio\u00adneer\u00ading fig\u00adures. \u201dJamaica\u201d points to the endur\u00ading qual\u00adi\u00adties of roots reg\u00adgae and \u201dObses\u00adsion\u201d salutes var\u00adi\u00adous branch\u00ades of the Rasta\u00adfari faith while remind\u00ading of the need for tak\u00ading per\u00adson\u00adal respon\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty for one\u2019s beliefs, all deliv\u00adered in poet\u00adic lan\u00adguage atop a rhythm that would not be out of place on a Steel Pulse album, which morphs into a lengthy dub work\u00adout. Mov\u00ading to the more gen\u00ader\u00adal, Spear implores sci\u00aden\u00adtists to make med\u00adical break\u00adthroughs on the opti\u00admistic \u201dCure For Can\u00adcer,\u201d sings the prais\u00ades of Jamaica\u2019s north\u00adwest par\u00adty town on \u201dNegril\u201d and on the heart\u00adfelt sin\u00adgle \u201dMom\u00admy,\u201d he details a family\u2019s strug\u00adgle to per\u00adse\u00advere in the face of the grave hard\u00adships of our con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adrary present, named by Spear as among the album\u2019s most per\u00adti\u00adnent works. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n \u201dIt\u2019s a strong song deal\u00ading with the fam\u00adi\u00adlies, bas\u00ading upon the Coro\u00adn\u00adavirus, but this song been record\u00aded way before,\u201d Spear empha\u00adsis\u00ades. \u201dWhat I\u2019m say\u00ading is that things is not gonna be the same as before; here comes the Coro\u00adna and hun\u00addreds and thou\u00adsands of peo\u00adple nev\u00ader get that call back to their jobs and they are nev\u00ader gonna get that call. So it\u2019s more like a sto\u00adry for par\u00adents to sit their kids down and tell them about what hap\u00adpened after the Coro\u00adna: here comes dad\u00addy, he\u2019s on the move look\u00ading some\u00adthing to do, and mommy\u2019s at home just hop\u00ading that dad\u00addy will come through with some food so they will able to pro\u00adlong with their lives and take care of their fam\u00adi\u00adly. That\u2019s what the song\u2019s deal\u00ading with.\u201d\n<\/p>\n\n\n

At the age of 78, Burn\u00ading Spear is among the last sur\u00adviv\u00ading reg\u00adgae icons, and it mar\u00advels that his wide-rang\u00ading tenor remains undi\u00admin\u00adished. Hav\u00ading kick-start\u00aded the roots reg\u00adgae sub\u00adgenre at Stu\u00addio One in 1969, he achieved inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal acclaim in the mid-1970s through a series of hard-hit\u00adting albums that rank amongst reggae\u2019s all-time great\u00adest, his stal\u00adwart posi\u00adtion main\u00adtained through qual\u00adi\u00adty releas\u00ades and spo\u00adradic tours char\u00adac\u00adterised by marathon per\u00adfor\u00admances with superb musi\u00adcal back\u00ading, but keep\u00ading up the momen\u00adtum has inevitably become more dif\u00adfi\u00adcult with the pass\u00ading of time. \u201dIt\u2019s not some\u00adthing I always want to do, but it\u2019s all about the peo\u00adple,\u201d says Spear, with a slight stam\u00admer. \u201dThe peo\u00adple are always request\u00ading me, and I know that the peo\u00adple come first.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born Win\u00adston Rod\u00adney in 1945 in St Ann\u2019s Bay, a size\u00adable fish\u00ading port on Jamaica\u2019s north coast that is the cap\u00adi\u00adtal of St Ann\u2019s parish, Burn\u00ading Spear sees him\u00adself as part of a trin\u00adi\u00adty of local heroes, togeth\u00ader with Mar\u00adcus Gar\u00advey and Bob Mar\u00adley. \u201dI\u2011man were born at 12 King Street, off Mar\u00adket Street, which was where Mar\u00adcus Gar\u00advey were born, and Bob also was from the same parish, so it\u2019s the three of us as one,\u201d he empha\u00adsis\u00ades. \u201dGrow\u00ading up, I had four broth\u00aders and eight sis\u00adters, so it\u2019s a huge fam\u00adi\u00adly, and I most like\u00adly be the sec\u00adond youngest. My home life is just like any oth\u00ader home life, where you have to obey your par\u00adents; my mom was a cook and my father do road con\u00adstruc\u00adtion and my par\u00adents was Pen\u00adte\u00adcostal, so I had to go to church two times for the day \u2014 you ain\u2019t chick\u00aden\u00ading out on that!\u201d Young Win\u00adston focussed on sports at school, until music infil\u00adtrat\u00aded his con\u00adscious\u00adness. \u201dAt St Ann\u2019s Pri\u00adma\u00adry, I was pret\u00adty hap\u00adpy as a young per\u00adson because soc\u00adcer and swim\u00adming and run\u00adning was my main hob\u00adbies. So grow\u00ading up, I wasn\u2019t think\u00ading about music or try\u00ading to sing. It hap\u00adpened by lis\u00adten\u00ading to oth\u00ader artists who were work\u00ading many years before me.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dI was lis\u00adten\u00ading to the real hard\u00adcore, I wasn\u2019t lis\u00adten\u00ading to the fan\u00adcy side of reg\u00adgae music. And one of my main peo\u00adple who I was lis\u00adten\u00ading to is Bob; I would lis\u00adten to every one of Bob\u2019s songs.\u201d<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Cur\u00adtis May\u00adfield and James Brown were among the for\u00adeign singers who inspired him, but local stars made greater impact as the fledgeling Jamaican music indus\u00adtry solid\u00adi\u00adfied. \u201dI start\u00aded to feel this music from the late-\u201950s into the ear\u00adly \u201960s, and this music\u2019s com\u00ading from a dis\u00adtance, cause it was men\u00adto, ska, rock steady, all those changes the music came through, and it\u2019s the same music that turn itself into reg\u00adgae. Jamaica had so much musi\u00adcians, like there was the great trom\u00adbone play\u00ader, Don Drum\u00admond, the gui\u00adtarist Ernest Ran\u00adglin, and there was some great peo\u00adple out there who were singing, like the Hep\u00adtones, Lar\u00adry Mar\u00adshall, Peter Tosh, Alton Ellis. All those brethren were there before I\u2011man, so I was lis\u00adten\u00ading to the real hard\u00adcore, I wasn\u2019t lis\u00adten\u00ading to the fan\u00adcy side of reg\u00adgae music. And one of my main peo\u00adple who I was lis\u00adten\u00ading to is Bob; I would lis\u00adten to every one of Bob\u2019s songs.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Win\u00adston Rod\u00adney came of age, he worked var\u00adi\u00adous menial jobs to make ends meet while broad\u00aden\u00ading his mind through dis\u00adcus\u00adsions with elders, who told him of Garvey\u2019s vision\u00adary qual\u00adi\u00adties and the pio\u00adneer\u00ading cam\u00adpaigns for black bet\u00adter\u00adment. Ulti\u00admate\u00adly, the spir\u00adi\u00adtu\u00adal awak\u00aden\u00ading that point\u00aded him in a dif\u00adfer\u00adent direc\u00adtion came through mys\u00adti\u00adcal won\u00adders, expe\u00adri\u00adenced at a local beach. \u201dI used to do dry clean\u00ading, car wash\u00ading and tiling, but here comes as Jah wish, for me to be a musi\u00adcian or an artist, and that is it,\u201d he says, defin\u00adi\u00adtive\u00adly. \u201dI was on Key Largo Beach, near where Mar\u00adcus Gar\u00advey used to be locat\u00aded at 1 Jail Lane, and that\u2019s where every\u00adthing start to hap\u00adpen: I\u2011man start to see my roots, my cul\u00adture, my his\u00adto\u00adry, where I\u2019m com\u00ading from orig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly, my peo\u00adple before me and my great-grandfather\u2019s\u2011father\u2019s\u2011father, so that\u2019s where I say \u2018Rasta\u00adfari\u2019 for the first time, that\u2019s where I grow my dreads. The aware\u00adness come to I\u2011man based upon my ener\u00adgy, for you\u2019ve got to be open think\u00ading, and the ener\u00adgy just came right there on the beach, and I don\u2019t even know where the lyrics came from, but the lyrics did come. And after a while, here comes melodies, so I sing it and I do the best I could with it. Lyrics or melodies is not some\u00adthing you real\u00adly look for, and when it comes you\u2019ve got to accept it and store it. So at Key Largo Beach, where Mar\u00adcus Gar\u00advey used to be locat\u00aded, that\u2019s where every\u00adthing get start\u00aded.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dur\u00ading this tran\u00adsi\u00adtion\u00adal phase, Rod\u00adney some\u00adtimes hitch\u00adhiked to the cap\u00adi\u00adtal, where he would rea\u00adson with Rasta\u00adfari brethren in the sprawl\u00ading slum of Back-O-Wall in west\u00adern Kingston, which led to his dis\u00adtinc\u00adtive stage name. \u201dAt times I was in Kingston, just hang\u00ading out, then I would go back on the north coast, so I start to inter\u00adtwine with peo\u00adple. I used to go to Indus\u00adtri\u00adal Ter\u00adrace off Span\u00adish Town Road, that was the joint where you could get your lit\u00adtle smoke and drink a beer, talk a lit\u00adtle with a guy named GG, a man who love to play him gui\u00adtar, and there were this man, we call him Nyah, and one time Nyah asked if I knew about Jomo Keny\u00adat\u00adta. He read up a lot on African his\u00adto\u00adry, and he told me, \u2018Man, it\u2019s a good name to car\u00adry as an artist,\u2019 then I decid\u00aded to go with the name, now that I get the full under\u00adstand\u00ading of who is Burn\u00ading Spear, the first repub\u00adli\u00adcan pres\u00adi\u00addent of Kenya.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As not\u00aded on the mil\u00adlen\u00adni\u00adal sin\u00adgle \u201dAs It Is\u201d from the \u201dCall\u00ading Rasta\u00adfari\u201d album, Burn\u00ading Spear was direct\u00aded to Stu\u00addio One by Bob Mar\u00adley, the chance meet\u00ading tak\u00ading place when he and his peers were deep in the St Ann\u2019s coun\u00adtry\u00adside, close to Marley\u2019s birth\u00adplace of Nine Mile, seek\u00ading qual\u00adi\u00adty herb and food\u00adstuffs to barter back in town. \u201dThat area is where most of the herb was cul\u00adti\u00advat\u00aded at that time, so we went into that area to get some good smoke,\u201d says Spear. \u201dAt the same time we want to bring coconut oil and oth\u00ader stuff that they just don\u2019t have in town, so we bring things to cre\u00adate an exchange, and I saw Bob com\u00ading down the street with his don\u00adkey and a lot of plants; Bob was going to his farm, doing his own cul\u00adti\u00adva\u00adtion, and at that time, Ras\u00adta\u00adman and Ras\u00adta\u00adman stand firm and was rea\u00adson\u00ading. I remem\u00adber ask\u00ading him how I could get start\u00aded in this music busi\u00adness and Bob asked I if I know of Stu\u00addio One.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n Win\u00adston Rod\u00adney thus made his way to the fabled record\u00ading stu\u00addio on Brent\u00adford Road found\u00aded by the for\u00admer cab\u00adi\u00adnet\u00admak\u00ader and sound sys\u00adtem pro\u00adpri\u00adetor Clement Dodd in the ear\u00adly 1960s, trav\u00adel\u00adling there with Rupert Will\u00ading\u00adton, who some\u00adtimes car\u00adried har\u00admo\u00adny when Rod\u00adney sang infor\u00admal\u00adly in St Ann\u2019s Bay. The Jamaican charts were then filled with fran\u00adtic, organ-led dance tunes and innocu\u00adous love bal\u00adlads, but the song they audi\u00adtioned with was star\u00adtling\u00adly dif\u00adfer\u00adent; omi\u00adnous, force\u00adful, and weighty, its bib\u00adli\u00adcal lyrics deliv\u00adered in thick patois with uncom\u00admon vocal phras\u00ading, it warned of dubi\u00adous inform\u00aders and exhort\u00aded the Rasta\u00adfari faith\u00adful to join togeth\u00ader in peace, chant\u00adi\u00adng down the oppres\u00adsive forces of Baby\u00adlon.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dI saw Bob com\u00ading down the street with his don\u00adkey and a lot of plants. And at that time, Ras\u00adta\u00adman and Ras\u00adta\u00adman stand firm and was rea\u00adson\u00ading. I remem\u00adber ask\u00ading him how I could get start\u00aded in this music busi\u00adness and Bob asked I if I know of Stu\u00addio One.\u201d<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\n \u201dWhen I reach in town, it was excit\u00ading, but I wasn\u2019t even pay\u00ading the excite\u00adment too much atten\u00adtion; I just want to go there and express myself musi\u00adcal\u00adly and let out what\u2019s inside of I\u2011man, that I\u2019ve been car\u00adry\u00ading for all these times,\u201d he explains. \u201dSo I came to Stu\u00addio One and tell Mr Dodd, \u2018Bob say I should come to you,\u2019 and Mr Dodd say I should sing what I got, and the first song that came out is \u2018Door Peep\u00ader.\u2019 And Mr Dodd was hap\u00adpy. He nev\u00ader heard any\u00adthing like that before, so to him, per\u00adhaps this can be gold! Rupert Will\u00ading\u00adton did back\u00adground vocals on a few songs and then he walked away. But I didn\u2019t walk away, I stood up.\u201d\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rod\u00adney remained at Stu\u00addio One to pro\u00adduce the albums \u201dRock\u00ading Time\u201d and \u201dPre\u00adsent\u00ading Burn\u00ading Spear,\u201d yield\u00ading a sec\u00adond hit in 1973 with the devo\u00adtion\u00adal \u201dHe Prayed\u201d (AKA \u201dJoe Fra\u00adzier\u201d), framed by a strik\u00ading trom\u00adbone line. \u201dIn the song, I speak about Jah prayed for I and you, until his sweat turned blood,\u201d Spear explains. \u201dI don\u2019t deal with colourism, nation\u00adal\u00adi\u00adty, or reli\u00adgion; I say glo\u00adry be to Jah, the cre\u00adator. We give thanks to the uni\u00adverse, to nature.\u201d How\u00adev\u00ader, like many of his peers, Burn\u00ading Spear became frus\u00adtrat\u00aded by the finan\u00adcial arrange\u00adments at Stu\u00addio One, but con\u00adcedes that he gained invalu\u00adable expe\u00adri\u00adence at the facil\u00adi\u00adty known as Jamaica\u2019s Motown. \u201dWhen the Hep\u00adtones and Del\u00adroy Wil\u00adson were record\u00ading, I see what\u2019s going on, and after that I start\u00aded to think for myself and arrange all my songs them. But Stu\u00addio One wasn\u2019t bring\u00ading me any\u00adthing when it comes fi like a salary; Mr Dodd keep it all for him\u00adself. So going to Stu\u00addio One is like, when you\u2019re a kid, you go to school until you grad\u00adu\u00adate, and when you grad\u00adu\u00adate you move on. So I walked away but I didn\u2019t walk away from the music; I walked away from Stu\u00addio One still main\u00adtain\u00ading my cre\u00adativ\u00adi\u00adty musi\u00adcal\u00adly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

The tim\u00ading of his break with Clement Dodd proved for\u00adtu\u00aditous, since sound sys\u00adtem pro\u00adpri\u00adetor Jack Ruby, who hailed from Green\u00adwich Farm in west\u00adern Kingston but who was then already based a few miles east of St Ann\u2019s Bay in Ocho Rios, was con\u00adtem\u00adplat\u00ading a move into record pro\u00adduc\u00adtion him\u00adself. Hav\u00ading long cham\u00adpi\u00adoned Burn\u00ading Spear\u2019s work on his sound sys\u00adtem, Ruby con\u00advinced Rod\u00adney to record for him with two back\u00ading vocal\u00adists, result\u00ading in the tem\u00adpo\u00adrary return of Rupert Will\u00ading\u00adton, along with anoth\u00ader St Ann\u2019s Bay hope\u00adful, Del\u00adroy Hines. \u201dThere was an audi\u00adtion tak\u00ading place at the Fed\u00ader\u00adal The\u00adatre in my town, so I went there and sing about Mar\u00adcus Gar\u00advey and about slav\u00adery days, but I was turned down,\u201d Spear con\u00adtin\u00adues. \u201dThen here comes Jack Ruby on the beach, say\u00ading he heard that I have two good songs, \u2018Mar\u00adcus Gar\u00advey\u2019 and \u2018Slav\u00adery Days\u2019, and he wouldn\u2019t mind work\u00ading with me. So from argu\u00adment to argu\u00adment we decid\u00aded to work togeth\u00ader.\u201d The resul\u00adtant \u201dMar\u00adcus Gar\u00advey\u201d is a land\u00admark album that con\u00adtained cel\u00ade\u00adbra\u00adto\u00adry odes to the Jamaican hero, as well as unflinch\u00ading por\u00adtray\u00adals of slav\u00adery and Jamaica\u2019s post-colo\u00adnial after\u00admath, as heard on \u201dSlav\u00adery Days,\u201d \u201dThe Inva\u00adsion,\u201d \u201dGive Me,\u201d and \u201dTra\u00addi\u00adtion.\u201d Burn\u00ading Spear thus became one of Jamaica\u2019s most pop\u00adu\u00adlar per\u00adform\u00ading artists, the album\u2019s over\u00adseas issue by Island Records great\u00adly expand\u00ading his audi\u00adence. Work\u00ading this time in the bet\u00adter-equipped con\u00adfines of Har\u00adry J\u2019s stu\u00addio, the fiery horn sec\u00adtion, expert\u00adly arranged by vet\u00ader\u00adan trum\u00adpeter Bob\u00adby Ellis, was cap\u00adtured in all its son\u00adic glo\u00adry, as Leroy \u201dHorse\u00admouth\u201d Wallace\u2019s furi\u00adous drum\u00adrolls and accent\u00aded rimshots locked tight\u00adly with Rob\u00adbie Shakespeare\u2019s rum\u00adbling bass. The mix\u00adture of old and new was also present on 1977\u2019s \u201dDry And Heavy,\u201d by which time Will\u00ading\u00adton and Hines had depart\u00aded, and when Island paired Burn\u00ading Spear with Aswad for his first British tour, the musi\u00adcal chem\u00adistry was potent, as heard on the acclaimed con\u00adcert album, \u201dLive At The Rain\u00adbow.\u201d \u201dWhen I hit the Rain\u00adbow The\u00adatre and oth\u00ader places in Eng\u00adland, every\u00adthing come out suc\u00adcess\u00adful,\u201d says Burn\u00ading Spear. \u201dIt was strong when I first see my fans in Eng\u00adland, and it was good for Aswad too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aswad would make a guest appear\u00adance on \u201dSocial Liv\u00ading,\u201d the last album Burn\u00ading Spear cut before leav\u00ading Island for EMI, which released \u201dHail HIM,\u201d \u201dFarover\u201d and \u201dFittest Of The Fittest\u201d in the ear\u00adly 1980s. Burn\u00ading Spear would con\u00adtin\u00adue to record the bulk of his work in Jamaica, but by the time he began field\u00ading it to Amer\u00adi\u00adcan inde\u00adpen\u00addents such as Slash and Heart\u00adbeat, he had shift\u00aded his base to Queens in the greater New York met\u00adro\u00adpol\u00adi\u00adtan area. \u201dBecause of my works, I think this is the right coun\u00adtry to come to, because in this coun\u00adtry, musi\u00adcal\u00adly, things can hap\u00adpen,\u201d he says prag\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly. \u201dWhat are you gonna do back in Jamaica? How much records you gonna sell? Who gonna be there to give you that kind of pro\u00admo\u00adtion to the record buy\u00aders? How much peo\u00adple is it going to be reach\u00ading to? In the new mil\u00adlen\u00adni\u00adum, Burn\u00ading Spear would be grant\u00aded the Order of Dis\u00adtinc\u00adtion for his ser\u00advices to the Jamaican music indus\u00adtry; he per\u00adformed in South Africa and Kenya, momen\u00adtous occa\u00adsions that helped him to recon\u00adnect with his African her\u00aditage, and he also helped build an infant school and infir\u00admary in St Ann\u2019s Bay. Then, dur\u00ading the ear\u00adly days of the pan\u00addem\u00adic, as con\u00adspir\u00ada\u00adcy the\u00ado\u00adries and fake news ran riot, sev\u00ader\u00adal high-pro\u00adfile reg\u00adgae artists made anti-vaxxer state\u00adments, with Siz\u00adzla even record\u00ading a song titled \u201dNo Vac\u00adcine.\u201d But Burn\u00ading Spear showed wis\u00addom, courage, and fore\u00adsight when he spoke pub\u00adlicly about his dou\u00adble-vac\u00adci\u00adna\u00adtion sta\u00adtus dur\u00ading a lengthy inter\u00adview, broad\u00adcast on radio sta\u00adtion WPKR in April 2021.
