His head\u00adlin\u00ading per\u00adfor\u00admance at the first edi\u00adtion of Verzuz\u2019s \u201dIconz\u201d con\u00adcert series \u2013 con\u00adceived by pro\u00adduc\u00aders Swizz Beats and Tim\u00adba\u00adland \u2013 on 16th<\/sup> of Octo\u00adber 2021 drew an audi\u00adence of 10,000 to Brook\u00adlyn\u2019s Bar\u00adclay\u2019s Cen\u00adter. Accord\u00ading to the pro\u00admot\u00ader, five mil\u00adlion peo\u00adple watched the livestream. By com\u00adpar\u00adi\u00adson, half a mil\u00adlion peo\u00adple watched the Verzuz clash between Bee\u00adnie Man and Boun\u00adty Killer in 2020. Pat Meschi\u00adno was on site and was even able to ask Super Cat a few ques\u00adtions before\u00adhand. His New York house and yard sound King Addies pro\u00advid\u00aded the per\u00adfect mix (see link at the end of this arti\u00adcle).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event began with the irre\u00adpress\u00adible Wyclef Jean leap\u00ading from the stage into the audi\u00adence where he per\u00adformed sev\u00ader\u00adal of his hits and intro\u00adduced prized dub plates by Whit\u00adney Hous\u00adton, Ken\u00adny Rogers and Clef\u2019s for\u00admer group, The Fugees, cus\u00adtomized for his Refugee sound sys\u00adtem. Clef also host\u00aded a vibrant ros\u00adter of Jamaican acts includ\u00ading ris\u00ading star Tee\u00adjay whose 2020 anthem \u201dFrom Rags to Rich\u00ades\u201d<\/a> elicit\u00aded a sing a long from the audi\u00adence; Dex\u00adta Daps, who toast\u00aded in a 1980s style pay\u00ading trib\u00adute to Cat; Baby Cham, earn\u00ading a rous\u00ading recep\u00adtion for \u201dGhet\u00adto Sto\u00adry\u201d<\/a> and the dynam\u00adic Bar\u00adring\u00adton Levy receiv\u00ading the loud\u00adest response of the night for robust ren\u00addi\u00adtions of his clas\u00adsics includ\u00ading \u201dMur\u00adder\u00ader\u201d<\/a> and \u201dHere I Come\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n

Imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly pre\u00adced\u00ading Super Cat was an abbre\u00advi\u00adat\u00aded 10-minute sound clash between ace selec\u00adtors, Lion Face of Lion King Sound and King\u00adPin from Brooklyn\u2019s King Addies. A clash\u00ading titan, Lion Face, for\u00admer\u00adly known as Baby Face, was a selec\u00adtor with Addies for many years and along\u00adside his men\u00adtor Dan\u00adny Dread estab\u00adlished the Brook\u00adlyn sound as near\u00adly unbeat\u00adable; Face left Addies in 2011 and since then King\u00adPin has led the sound to numer\u00adous clash vic\u00adto\u00adries. The sound clash pro\u00adto\u00adtype, devel\u00adoped in Jamaica in the 1950s, pro\u00advides the tem\u00adplate for Verzuz\u2019s pop\u00adu\u00adlar music bat\u00adtles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Super Cat chose Lion Face and King\u00adPin for Iconz because of his long\u00adstand\u00ading asso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion with King Addies<\/a>, which goes back to their 1983 incep\u00adtion as Addies Hi-Fi. \u201dI was hang\u00ading out with a great friend of mine, Peter Young, we called him Mr. Mac, and one night, he want\u00aded to cel\u00ade\u00adbrate his birth\u00adday, so he said, \u2018I\u2019m going to look for Addies,\u2019\u201d Cat recalled at a Long Island, New York record\u00ading stu\u00addio three days before his Iconz per\u00adfor\u00admance. \u201dBack then, Addies was a lit\u00adtle com\u00adpo\u00adnent set with two small box\u00ades (speak\u00aders). Mr. Mac liked lis\u00adten\u00ading to Addies because he didn\u2019t go out to par\u00adties. So, Mr. Mac was smok\u00ading, drink\u00ading cham\u00adpagne, and the com\u00adpo\u00adnent set broke down; he reached in his pock\u00adet, put US$7,000 on the table and told Addies, \u2018go get your\u00adself some amps and some prop\u00ader backs because the next time I come over here, I don\u2019t want that to hap\u00adpen again.\u2019 Addies was born right there, so on our Barclay\u2019s show we will have Addies and Face remind\u00ading peo\u00adple that we come from the sound sys\u00adtem, until we trans\u00adformed into play\u00ading with a live band.\u201d<\/p>

Jamaican sound sys\u00adtems were essen\u00adtial to Super Cat\u2019s ascent, as they\u2019ve been to the careers of many reg\u00adgae leg\u00adends. Born William Antho\u00adny Maragh on June 25, 1963, to a Black-Jamaican moth\u00ader and an Indi\u00adan-Jamaican father, Super Cat dropped out of school as a child because Kingston\u2019s tense polit\u00adi\u00adcal rival\u00adries of the 1970s and \u201880s made it unsafe to ven\u00adture out\u00adside in cer\u00adtain com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties. \u201dA lot of youth dropped out, that\u2019s why many ghet\u00adto youths didn\u2019t get the knowl\u00adedge they need\u00aded, the ter\u00adri\u00adble polit\u00adi\u00adcal war got in the way. Bob Mar\u00adley got shot (in Decem\u00adber 1976 at his Kingston home) in the mid\u00addle of the same pol\u00adi\u00adtics that sep\u00ada\u00adrates us and keeps us under for years upon years,\u201d Cat lament\u00aded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At just 9 years old Super Cat start\u00aded dee\u00adjay\u00ading (i.e., toast\u00ading) on the mic with Soul Impe\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal Hi-Fi at Bam\u00adboo Lawn, a venue in his Kingston 11 com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty, along\u00adside his men\u00adtor and close friend, (the late) Ear\u00adly B. \u201dCom\u00ading up, I was in the cir\u00adcle of the late, great Rank\u00ading Trevor, U\u2011Roy was his teacher. That\u2019s when King Tubby\u2019s (the cre\u00adator of dub) was mak\u00ading sound waves over Jamaica,\u201d Cat recalled. \u201dRank\u00ading Trevor was work\u00ading with a sound called Crown Atom\u00adic Hi-Fi and they used to play at Bam\u00adboo Lawn. Ear\u00adly B and his broth\u00ader Tata were the first to give me the mic, say\u00ading, \u2018you\u2019re stand\u00ading so close, watch\u00ading every move, it seems you got some lyrics to say.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cat\u2019s first words on a mic were grit\u00adty gun lyrics, a pre\u00addictable result of liv\u00ading in a war-torn envi\u00adron\u00adment: \u201dCome from one and all let them pull up 11, tell dem if dem find 19, dem gonna find heav\u00aden, this one name AK47<\/em>.\u201d \u201dStand\u00ading around these guys was a pow\u00ader\u00adful influ\u00adence so even at that young age, it wasn\u2019t intim\u00adi\u00addat\u00ading,\u201d Super Cat reflect\u00aded on his pre\u00adco\u00adcious mic ini\u00adti\u00ada\u00adtion. \u201dRank\u00ading Trevor was mak\u00ading hit after hit so grow\u00ading up on those sounds, look\u00ading at what those peo\u00adple were per\u00adform\u00ading, the spir\u00adit goes inside and just lifts you up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
