Trap dance\u00adhall per\u00adformer Jahshii\u2019s trou\u00adbles in his home com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty of Grant\u2019s Pan, root\u00aded in spec\u00adu\u00adla\u00adtion of his being con\u00adnect\u00aded to the death of a man who \u201ddissed\u201d his moth\u00ader and esca\u00adlat\u00ading with the killing of Jahshii\u2019s broth\u00ader and the shoot\u00ading up of a set of vehi\u00adcles he was trav\u00adel\u00adling with, are deep\u00ader than they first appear. There is a com\u00adplex web of loy\u00adal\u00adty, street \u201dcreds\u201d, mis\u00adplaced machoness and the curi\u00adous Jamaican con\u00adcept of \u201drich and switch\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I doubt that per\u00adsons who have not been to Jamaica and seen some Jamaican dance\u00adhall per\u00adform\u00aders \u2013 dee\u00adjays, real\u00adly \u2013 on their home soil enter a venue with a crowd in tow can tru\u00adly under\u00adstand what an entourage tru\u00adly means. It is not the same as a some\u00adwhat orga\u00adnized group of sup\u00adport per\u00adson\u00adnel, where it can be dis\u00adcerned that the per\u00adsons mak\u00ading up the gag\u00adgle behind the per\u00adformer have some func\u00adtion. Instead, it is a large crowd of (almost invari\u00adably) all men, proud of their asso\u00adci\u00ada\u00adtion with \u201dde artiste\u201d and anx\u00adious to prove their loy\u00adal\u00adty. And the size of the \u201dman\u00adtourage\u201d is often con\u00adsid\u00adered pro\u00adpor\u00adtion\u00adate to the sta\u00adtus of the dee\u00adjay. In oth\u00ader words, the more men walk\u00ading with a dee\u00adjay, the more rec\u00adog\u00adnized and pow\u00ader\u00adful he is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, these per\u00adsons must have a lot of time on their hands (as in unem\u00adployed) and seek\u00ading val\u00adi\u00adda\u00adtion (as in gen\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly lack\u00ading in high lev\u00adels of for\u00admal edu\u00adca\u00adtion) to add to an artiste\u2019s pack of prove sup\u00adport\u00aders. And, in the main, most times they will be con\u00adnect\u00aded to the low\u00ader socioe\u00adco\u00adnom\u00adic com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty the dee\u00adjay comes from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This link is not only Jahshii and Grant\u2019s Pen. It is Shab\u00adba Ranks and Boun\u00adty Killer<\/a> with Seav\u00adiew. It is Cham<\/a> and Sher\u00adlock Cres\u00adcent. It is Siz\u00adzla<\/a> and Judge\u00adment Yard in August Town. Mava\u00addo<\/a> and Cas\u00adsa\u00adva Piece. Kar\u00adtel<\/a> and the \u201dGaza\u201d area of Port\u00admore. It is Josey Wales<\/a> and Dad\u00addy U\u2011Roy and Olympic Gar\u00addens. It is Bob Mar\u00adley<\/a> and Trench Town. Heck, it is Bass Odyssey and Alexan\u00addria in St. Ann. Or Black Kat and Chris\u00adtiana, Man\u00adches\u00adter. Or King Jam\u00admy<\/a>\u2019s sound sys\u00adtem and stu\u00addio in Water\u00adhouse. Look into the his\u00adto\u00adry of many Jamaican Pop\u00adu\u00adlar Music per\u00adform\u00aders from a poor back\u00adground and a com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty that is fierce\u00adly proud of him or her, and expects that loy\u00adal\u00adty to be returned in cash or kind (or both) forms part of the suc\u00adcess sto\u00adry.<\/p>

<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

But it is a dou\u00adble-edged sword. In Jamaica there is a term called \u201drich and switch\u201d, where some\u00adone who has new\u00adly acquired wealth \u2013 that is the rich \u2013 is per\u00adceived to have aban\u00addoned and been dis\u00adloy\u00adal to the place they grew up in and those who are still in a state of pover\u00adty, find\u00ading new friends and hang\u00adouts \u2013 hence the switch. And woe be unto the artiste who has got rich and switched. And it does not take much for this to be mur\u00admured into real\u00adi\u00adty \u2013 not turn\u00ading up as reg\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adly as before, dri\u00adving in the area with car win\u00addows wound up and the air-con\u00addi\u00adtion\u00ading on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which leaves Jahshii, and many oth\u00ader dance\u00adhall per\u00adform\u00aders, in a quandary. They seem to have made enough mon\u00adey to live very com\u00adfort\u00adably \u201duptown\u201d (a rather vague term, space, but cer\u00adtain\u00adly not with zinc fences, cor\u00adner shops and elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty being bla\u00adtant\u00adly stolen), but are com\u00adpelled or com\u00admit\u00adted to hang\u00ading out in the home com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty. And that can be a place where it is so easy to be caught between feel\u00ading at home and need\u00ading to prove that it is still home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So this brings us back to Jahshii and Grant\u2019s Pen, a sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion which echoes Mava\u00addo and Cas\u00adsa\u00adva Piece a few years ago, when he inter\u00advened in an alter\u00adca\u00adtion between his son and some\u00adone in the com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty. That end\u00aded in a sprint to the police sta\u00adtion. For to be seem\u00ading\u00adly forced out is to lose \u201dstreet creds\u201d, but to vol\u00adun\u00adtar\u00adi\u00adly move out and not return much is to \u201drich and switch\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the end, to not go is a case of very mis\u00adplaced loy\u00adal\u00adties and focus, which is epit\u00ado\u00admized by the Bee\u00adnie Man<\/a> song in which he declares a com\u00admit\u00adment to \u201ddis block\u201d that he grew up on, will fight on and die for. He did not mean it, of course, as Moses Davis is a very long way from Craig Town where he says \u201dAunt Zeta grow me\u201d. Jahshii may have some grow\u00ading up to do before he real\u00adizes that rich comes with switch\u00ading, for even if he has not changed, the mon\u00adey changes those on the \u201dblock\u201d. He would be well advised to leave Grant\u2019s Pen to its own devices for a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After all, there is a rea\u00adson why the Bob Mar\u00adley Muse\u00adum is at 56 Hope Road and not in Trench Town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
