After keep\u00ading a low pro\u00adfile for five years, releas\u00ading scarce\u00adly any\u00adthing under his own name and play\u00ading only a hand\u00adful of shows, he sud\u00adden\u00adly drops an album with almost no warn\u00ading: a record that pays homage to reg\u00adgae tra\u00addi\u00adtion, stands shoul\u00adder to shoul\u00adder with the greats, and still man\u00adages to rethink the genre. But instead of pro\u00admot\u00ading it to the hilt, he grants almost no inter\u00adviews, doesn\u2019t go on tour, and oth\u00ader\u00adwise con\u00adtin\u00adues to keep his dis\u00adtance from the pub\u00adlic eye. Bright\u00adly paint\u00aded wood\u00aden huts added splash\u00ades of colour, and even the small\u00adest vil\u00adlages buzzed with activ\u00adi\u00adty. Now, as far as the eye can see, stretch\u00ades a grey-brown waste\u00adland lit\u00adtered with bare branch\u00ades, top\u00adpled pow\u00ader poles, uproot\u00aded trees, roofs torn off, walls col\u00adlapsed, win\u00addows shat\u00adtered, house\u00adhold belong\u00adings scat\u00adtered about\u2026 Des\u00ado\u00adlate scenes, under\u00adscored by con\u00adsol\u00ading words and heal\u00ading music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f79d7c8988c78972db0578d9c82f008d\">Reels like these, doc\u00adu\u00adment\u00ading the cat\u00ada\u00adstro\u00adphe, move from one Chronixx track to the next. The rapid pulse of the dig\u00adi\u00adtal feed is slowed by the pull of an ana\u00adlogue pro\u00adduc\u00adtion and a famil\u00adiar voice \u2013 one that hasn\u2019t been this present in years, yet now seems to be the life\u00adline an entire nation is grasp\u00ading for. The apoc\u00ada\u00adlyp\u00adtic scale of the dev\u00adas\u00adta\u00adtion, the sheer suf\u00adfer\u00ading of the peo\u00adple, cries out for a coun\u00adter\u00adbal\u00adance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-bd0cf5891738403c896ce85e3ffbd4c1 is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-ffddde5183e56fa5a3fae77b5b66dafe\"><br><strong>\u201d<em>When the tides were so high and strong<br>You gave me shel\u00adter from the rain<br>On an open and rag\u00ading sea<br>You res\u00adcued me<\/em>\u201d<\/strong><br>(\u201dHur\u00adri\u00adcane\u201d)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b370ab97dd0c4ec168021c422298862f\">On Octo\u00adber 28, the Cat\u00ade\u00adgo\u00adry 5 mon\u00adster Melis\u00adsa made land\u00adfall on Jamaica\u2019s south coast with extreme wind speeds of over 300 kilo\u00adme\u00adters per hour and a min\u00adi\u00admum cen\u00adtral pres\u00adsure of bare\u00adly 900 hec\u00adtopas\u00adcals, mak\u00ading it one of the strongest hur\u00adri\u00adcanes ever record\u00aded in the Atlantic. Two and a half weeks ear\u00adli\u00ader, on Octo\u00adber 10 \u2013 his 33rd birth\u00adday \u2013 Chronixx had released \u201dExile,\u201d his sec\u00adond album, a 17-track fol\u00adlow-up to his debut \u201dChronol\u00ado\u00adgy\u201d. Chronixx seems to pos\u00adsess a prophet\u00adic gift: unwit\u00adting\u00adly, he has cre\u00adat\u00aded the heal\u00ading sound\u00adtrack to the most mas\u00adsive, human-made nat\u00adur\u00adal dis\u00adas\u00adter ever to strike Jamaica. His prayer\u00adful track \u201dHur\u00adri\u00adcane\u201d plays on an end\u00adless loop across Insta\u00adgram feeds. Inter\u00adspersed are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8u-Tt2XZIwk&amp;list=RD8u-Tt2XZIwk&amp;start_radio=1\">\u201dResilient,\u201d<\/a> a call to inner strength wrapped in a love song, the sur\u00advival anthem <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=03i6apR-Pgw&amp;list=RD03i6apR-Pgw&amp;start_radio=1\">\u201dSur\u00advivor,\u201d<\/a> and the uplift\u00ading, hope-bear\u00ading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pj9k3GKgWrg&amp;list=RDpj9k3GKgWrg&amp;start_radio=1\">\u201dKeep On Ris\u00ading.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-style-default has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-aabaea1b4093d82f55b18c1ea0d68b2b is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><br><strong>\u201d<em>And you inspired the best in me<br>So I could stand for what I believe<br>Gave me peace that sur\u00adpas\u00adseth all<br>Eter\u00adni\u00adty<\/em>\u201d<\/strong><br>(\u201dHur\u00adri\u00adcane\u201d)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-fc92bb1ffe68daf739ca079076efab79\">There is some\u00adthing prophet\u00adic even in the album cov\u00ader, if you fol\u00adlow the singer\u2019s far-sight\u00aded gaze into the dis\u00adtance. His grainy pro\u00adfile occu\u00adpies half of the earth-toned art\u00adwork. To the left, a dirt road; above it, a sun\u00adset beneath a cloud\u00aded sky \u2013 no title, no artist name, noth\u00ading to dis\u00adtract. At the time, no one on the island could have imag\u00adined just how deeply they would come to need the album\u2019s sooth\u00ading, uplift\u00ading, and poet\u00adic words, or its warm\u00adly com\u00adfort\u00ading ana\u00adlogue sound. The Jamaican pho\u00adtog\u00adra\u00adph\u00ader Sabriya Simon wrote the fol\u00adlow\u00ading about the album in a com\u00admen\u00adtary on Insta\u00adgram: \u201dMay many now over\u00adstand that this is part\u00adly what sacred devo\u00adtion and sacred ser\u00advice \u2013 to one\u00adSelf, to fam\u00adi\u00adly, to the earth, to love, to pur\u00adpose and to the Almighty \u2013 look, sound and feel like \u2013 all in divine time. May the light med\u00adi\u00adcine of this offer\u00ading be received in a mighty way by all who need it.\u201d Right now many seem to need this med\u00adi\u00adcine. First releas\u00ades such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XF3J9GM_rO0&amp;list=RDXF3J9GM_rO0&amp;start_radio=1\">\u201dStart A Fyah,\u201d<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hk7Lgh0AW74&amp;list=RDhk7Lgh0AW74&amp;start_radio=1\">\u201dOdd Ras,\u201d<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sGM3UZX518I&amp;list=RDsGM3UZX518I&amp;start_radio=1\">\u201dThey Don\u2019t Know,\u201d<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LfeIfiiBTfY&amp;list=RDLfeIfiiBTfY&amp;start_radio=1\">\u201dHere Comes Trou\u00adble\u201d<\/a> were instant hits. The Major Laz\u00ader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PL1zEWeYbLE7VXLvVG-Ha-dUn5Q8NvBVe9\">mix\u00adtape \u201dStart A Fyah,\u201d<\/a> curat\u00aded by Wal\u00adshy Fire, was our per\u00adson\u00adal album of the year in 2013. At a 2014 per\u00adfor\u00admance com\u00admem\u00ado\u00adrat\u00ading Lit\u00adtle Joe \u2013 the founder of the Jah Ova Evil move\u00adment, through which Chronixx first became a singer \u2013 we had the dis\u00adtinct feel\u00ading we were wit\u00adness\u00ading a super\u00adstar in the mak\u00ading. And we were clear\u00adly not alone: the inter\u00adest shown by fig\u00adures such as Chris Black\u00adwell, Mick Jag\u00adger, and Amer\u00adi\u00adcan late-night host Jim\u00admy Fal\u00adlon spoke vol\u00adumes. The first offered him a pub\u00adlish\u00ading deal ear\u00adly on. The sec\u00adond, on his own birth\u00adday in 2014, made a point of catch\u00ading a Chronixx con\u00adcert in New York\u2019s Cen\u00adtral Park. The third invit\u00aded him onto his show three times \u2013 in 2014, 2017, and 2020. Com\u00adpar\u00adisons to Bob Mar\u00adley were not long in com\u00ading. When we cel\u00ade\u00adbrat\u00aded his debut \u201dChronol\u00ado\u00adgy\u201d as an \u201dalbum of the cen\u00adtu\u00adry\u201d in RIDDIM in 2017, we were wide\u00adly crit\u00adi\u00adcized \u2013 yet by now it\u2019s beyond dis\u00adpute that the record raised the bar for mod\u00adern reg\u00adgae pro\u00adduc\u00adtions to a lev\u00adel that only few have reached since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-53284b926b7febf742f31d367d23899c\">But from the very begin\u00adning, Chronixx resist\u00aded com\u00admer\u00adcial suc\u00adcess. When Jamaica\u2019s Min\u00adistry of Cul\u00adture host\u00aded the mini-fes\u00adti\u00adval \u201dArts In The Park\u201d in Kingston\u2019s Hope Gar\u00addens in 2013 \u2013 an event designed to show\u00adcase promis\u00ading acts like Pro\u00adto\u00adje, Rag\u00ading Fyah, and Nomad\u00addz to rep\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtives of U.S. record labels \u2013 Chronixx deliv\u00adered what may have been the most aggres\u00adsive per\u00adfor\u00admance of his career. He kicked out, issued unmis\u00adtak\u00adable dec\u00adla\u00adra\u00adtions, and rapped more than he sang. He made it abun\u00addant\u00adly clear that he had no inter\u00adest in being signed by any\u00adone in atten\u00addance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c94b345008f997b846a4ce38efef5c7c\">In an inter\u00adview con\u00adduct\u00aded just two months lat\u00ader, ahead of his con\u00adcert at Wuppertal\u2019s U\u2011Club, he vent\u00aded his frus\u00adtra\u00adtion with the music indus\u00adtry and the expec\u00adta\u00adtions placed upon him. \u201dMusic is pure, the indus\u00adtry is cor\u00adrupt, it\u2019s demon\u00adic. It is neg\u00ada\u00adtive, because if all that you exult is neg\u00ada\u00adtive, that mean you are neg\u00ada\u00adtive. Me bun dem indus\u00adtry, man, me blaze it. Right now if I could kill some indus\u00adtry peo\u00adple me do it. Selassie I know! Ah Jah real\u00adly man\u00adi\u00adfest through me and make me into a bet\u00adter youth, too and light\u00aden me heart against cer\u00adtain peo\u00adple. Because the music nah go reach far with cer\u00adtain peo\u00adple walk\u00ading among us. Me no signed to no label. No label man can bring no con\u00adtract and gi\u2019 me, me spit pon it. Me nah fol\u00adlow nobody! The only peo\u00adple who me take argu\u00adment from is musi\u00adcian. My friends are musi\u00adcians, my fam\u00adi\u00adly are musi\u00adcians.\u201d He wast\u00aded no time offer\u00ading the ratio\u00adnale behind his stance: \u201dIt is said that Chronixx is hype and dem put me up on a pedastal now fi some\u00adbody start shoot arrows off ah me. But hear wha gwaan, me no deh pon nobody pedestal nei\u00adther. So it\u2019s an emp\u00adty pedestal dem have up deh. Them can call me up for a medal and me not going for it. Because I don\u2019t want no medal, no tro\u00adphy from Baby\u00adlon!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/riddim.world\/mystaging01\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/A28A8663-1024x683.jpeg\" alt class=\"wp-image-7289\" style=\"aspect-ratio:16\/9;object-fit:cover\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8b5c2def070408c13e434022431d00de\">Chronixx has nev\u00ader sought the spot\u00adlight. When Rihan\u00adna approached him for a col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion on her long-promised but nev\u00ader-released reg\u00adgae album, he report\u00aded\u00adly \u2013 accord\u00ading to a mem\u00adber of his team at the time \u2013 polite\u00adly declined, say\u00ading he wouldn\u2019t help a mil\u00adlion\u00adaire sell lin\u00adgerie. The notion that he might one day with\u00addraw from pub\u00adlic life was there\u00adfore embed\u00added in him from ear\u00adly on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3a63d21f68735ec989a462af3aa934e1\">Short\u00adly after the start of the pan\u00addem\u00adic, he pulled his announced sec\u00adond album, \u201dDela Splash<strong>\u201d <\/strong>\u2013 exten\u00adsive\u00adly dis\u00adcussed in <strong>RIDDIM 02\/20 <\/strong>\u2013 and shift\u00aded his focus to his still-new role as a father. The man\u00adage\u00adment team of close friends that had tak\u00aden care of him from the very begin\u00adning and grown along\u00adside his career dis\u00adsolved, as did the ZincFence Band, with whom Chronixx had spent eight years tour\u00ading the world. Those close to him say he nev\u00ader stopped mak\u00ading music. He is said to have record\u00aded mul\u00adti\u00adple albums, yet only a hand\u00adful of fea\u00adtures and his work with SAULT \u2013 projects that don\u2019t even bear his name \u2013 have sur\u00adfaced. As he said on David Rodigan\u2019s BBC 1Xtra radio show: \u201dI felt like there was a point when the whole world kind of with\u00addrew. I felt like I had to extend my thing. And my main expe\u00adri\u00adence was pur\u00adsu\u00ading music, try\u00ading to become the artist I always want\u00aded to become. And that became so cru\u00adcial and impor\u00adtant to me to a point where I just couldn\u2019t wait any\u00admore. I was like I need to go now and prac\u00adtice, go into the stu\u00addio and start read\u00ading, study\u00ading every\u00adthing about even my music. Because then I would come to Lon\u00addon and every\u00adbody knew every\u00adthing about Reg\u00adgae music, except us, you know, as the younger ones. So I\u2019m just like, we can\u2019t con\u00adtin\u00adue like this, we have to be part of the con\u00adver\u00adsa\u00adtion gen\u00aduine\u00adly. Not just because we are Jamaican or because we look the way we look or we say the thing that we say. Like\u00adwise, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=r8gbmwN5Fw8&amp;list=RDr8gbmwN5Fw8&amp;start_radio=1\">\u201dI and I\u201d<\/a> feels musi\u00adcal\u00adly indebt\u00aded to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=W5lAQJYLuWI&amp;list=RDW5lAQJYLuWI&amp;start_radio=1\">\u201dGuilti\u00adness\u201d<\/a>. Yet despite the unmis\u00adtak\u00adable influ\u00adence of \u201dExo\u00addus\u201d on \u201dExile\u201d, Chronixx nev\u00ader relin\u00adquish\u00ades his own iden\u00adti\u00adty. He has inter\u00adnalised the reg\u00adgae tra\u00addi\u00adtion of the 1970s and shaped some\u00adthing entire\u00adly his own from it. In a man\u00adner rem\u00adi\u00adnis\u00adcent of Marley\u2019s play\u00adful exper\u00adi\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion with blues, soul, and British rock, Chronixx flirts with clas\u00adsic Black music styles \u2013 gospel, soul, funk, and dis\u00adco \u2013 and in the deeply mov\u00ading \u201dHur\u00adri\u00adcane\u201d, even with the folk of the Amer\u00adi\u00adcan civ\u00adil rights move\u00adment as embod\u00adied by Bob Dylan. All of these are roots-based gen\u00adres, which, as with the King of Reg\u00adgae, ulti\u00admate\u00adly bow to a Caribbean off\u00adbeat. It is a musi\u00adcal stream of con\u00adscious\u00adness, a con\u00adscious\u00adly qui\u00adet and intro\u00adspec\u00adtive, yet no less res\u00adolute, man\u00adi\u00adfesto of per\u00adson\u00adal free\u00addom \u2013 raw and ten\u00adder at once. Meet\u00ading expec\u00adta\u00adtions is now less than ever his aim, which per\u00adhaps explains, along\u00adside the wide\u00adspread acclaim, some of the resis\u00adtance the album has encoun\u00adtered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f10676c1a17923bb2928628cfde10d69\">Loos\u00adened, uncon\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal \u2013 or at least acquired-taste \u2013 song struc\u00adtures, fluc\u00adtu\u00ada\u00adtions in vol\u00adume, tape hiss, ambi\u00adent noise, and room acoustics chal\u00adlenge lis\u00adten\u00ading habits and can at times cause irri\u00adta\u00adtion. Some lis\u00adten\u00aders may miss obvi\u00adous hits. The songs some\u00adtimes feel unfin\u00adished or sketch-like, the pro\u00adduc\u00adtion rough, imper\u00adfect. Yet it is pre\u00adcise\u00adly these qual\u00adi\u00adties that give the album its dis\u00adtinc\u00adtive authen\u00adtic\u00adi\u00adty, its vin\u00adtage charm, a sense of imme\u00addi\u00ada\u00adcy, and pull us deep into the world of its cre\u00adator. The man seems to fear no musi\u00adcal bound\u00adaries. His range spans British indie rock, bom\u00adbas\u00adtic hip-hop pro\u00adduc\u00adtion, vin\u00adtage soul, raw punk, choral gospel, clas\u00adsi\u00adcal music, orches\u00adtral broad\u00adband scores, and even musi\u00adcal and operetta inter\u00adludes. Essen\u00adtial\u00adly, he cov\u00aders the entire spec\u00adtrum of Black music \u2013 and then some. This has earned him com\u00adpar\u00adisons to a young Quin\u00adcy Jones. R&amp;B super-pro\u00adduc\u00ader Jim\u00admy Jam says that Inflo turns every\u00adthing he touch\u00ades into the best music pos\u00adsi\u00adble. Adele recalls marathon five-hour \u201dther\u00ada\u00adpy ses\u00adsions\u201d with him, in which he drew out feel\u00adings she didn\u2019t know she had, trans\u00adform\u00ading them into some of her most intense songs. Before Lit\u00adtle Simz end\u00aded their long-stand\u00ading friend\u00adship over finan\u00adcial dis\u00adputes ear\u00adli\u00ader this year and has since com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adcat\u00aded with him only via lawyers, she described their musi\u00adcal col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion as a fear\u00adless exchange, a push\u00ading of bound\u00adaries root\u00aded in pro\u00adfound mutu\u00adal trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-eced3cd94a3bc79c401482ab393e0afd\">Inflo\u2019s ethos is per\u00adhaps most evi\u00addent in SAULT, a col\u00adlec\u00adtive of extra\u00ador\u00addi\u00adnar\u00adi\u00adly tal\u00adent\u00aded artists and musi\u00adcians whose names and faces remain large\u00adly hid\u00adden. The 2020 album <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7PI30VNhJGs&amp;list=OLAK5uy_mPQ1zX6FZ2noGfGMWXN9cnVkoqD18R-OM\">\u201dUnti\u00adtled (Black Is)\u201d<\/a>, whose min\u00adi\u00admal cov\u00ader fea\u00adtures a Black Pow\u00ader fist on a black back\u00adground, became a sound\u00adtrack for the Black Lives Mat\u00adter move\u00adment. Black\u00adness \u2013 as a con\u00adfi\u00addent, unapolo\u00adgetic, yet non-aggres\u00adsive state\u00adment, a form of empow\u00ader\u00adment against ram\u00adpant, dan\u00adger\u00adous white suprema\u00adcy \u2013 is cen\u00adtral to the work of SAULT, Inflo, and Chronixx alike. The Jamaican first appeared in con\u00adnec\u00adtion with SAULT on \u201dAngel\u201d, a ten-minute blues-gospel-spo\u00adken-word opus from Octo\u00adber 2022, reflect\u00ading on the life and death of a soul rebel in the wake of George Floyd\u2019s mur\u00adder. The track is divid\u00aded into seem\u00ading\u00adly dis\u00adparate musi\u00adcal seg\u00adments, yet it flows as a cohe\u00adsive nar\u00adra\u00adtive. Since then, Chronixx is fea\u00adtured on near\u00adly every SAULT release. On the punk-infused \u201dMon\u00adey\u201d, he sounds more like the Dead Kennedys than Bob Mar\u00adley. In keep\u00ading with the collective\u2019s ethos, the singer remained cir\u00adcum\u00adspect in his com\u00adments to Rodi\u00adgan: \u201dWell, SAULT is the music of SAULT.
