The clev\u00ader\u00adly com\u00adbined blend of Dr. Dre\u2019s \u201dThe Next Episode\u201d instru\u00admen\u00adtal and Queen Omega\u2019s rapid-fire lyri\u00adcism works flaw\u00adless\u00adly. And I\u2019m real\u00adly hap\u00adpy about that. Because it\u2019s real\u00adly touched peo\u00adple that don\u2019t real\u00adly know about reg\u00adgae and they will just get some trac\u00adtion and say, okay well, that\u2019s amaz\u00ading, I\u2019m gonna start to fol\u00adlow this project. And so they dis\u00adcov\u00ader new artists and it brings reg\u00adgae back to a much wider crowd. Then reg\u00adgae as a whole moves for\u00adward.\u201d The plan seems to be work\u00ading. A look at the num\u00adbers con\u00adfirms it: near\u00adly four mil\u00adlion fol\u00adlow\u00aders on Insta\u00adgram, more than 1.3 mil\u00adlion sub\u00adscribers on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCjZ_OTgPZZ-c-gLCoBWPwvQ\">YouTube<\/a>, and a sense of omnipres\u00adence across count\u00adless \u201dFor You\u201d-pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-05bba465874b9f4f40f831baeba7e18a\">Behind these num\u00adbers lie years of work and ded\u00adi\u00adca\u00adtion. Lit\u00adtle Lion car\u00adries its name for a rea\u00adson. When Nico\u00adlas Meury hap\u00adpens to hear a Bob Mar\u00adley album from his old\u00ader broth\u00ader at the age of eight, he\u2019s instant\u00adly hooked. He starts dig\u00adging through what were still numer\u00adous reg\u00adgae record shops in Gene\u00adva at the time (around 2000), soak\u00ading up every\u00adthing his allowance will stretch to. When a first work place\u00adment is required after pri\u00adma\u00adry school, the des\u00adti\u00adna\u00adtion for twelve-year-old Nico\u00adlas is clear: \u201dI used to go to Reg\u00adgae Fever on a reg\u00adu\u00adlar basis because it was next to the train sta\u00adtion on my way to school. I asked about an intern\u00adship, they said yes. After that I stayed and end\u00aded up work\u00ading for them on a reg\u00adu\u00adlar basis after school. I got paid in 45s. When an unpop\u00adu\u00adlar slot opens up at the French online radio sta\u00adtion \u201dReg\u00adgae Vibes,\u201d he spots the oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty and applies with\u00adout dis\u00adclos\u00ading his age. \u201dI got the Sat\u00adur\u00adday evening slot, when all the oth\u00ader DJs were play\u00ading their dances, so they didn\u2019t want that slot. Grad\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly I start\u00aded get\u00adting invit\u00aded to more and more dances \u2013 warm-ups, birth\u00addays, school par\u00adties\u2026\u201d When every stu\u00addent at col\u00adlege is asked to real\u00adize an indi\u00advid\u00adual art project, Nico\u00adlas refus\u00ades to set\u00adtle for some\u00adthing small and instead sets his mind on build\u00ading a sound sys\u00adtem. \u201dI said I just need some mon\u00adey to cov\u00ader the costs, but I can take bring the project for\u00adward myself.\u201d The result is a deal: the school cov\u00aders the mate\u00adr\u00adi\u00adal costs, and in return Meury takes care of the sound at three end-of-year school par\u00adties. A no-brain\u00ader. \u201dThose school par\u00adties sparked a real move\u00adment of young peo\u00adple lis\u00adten\u00ading to reg\u00adgae. There\u2019s an entire gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion in Gene\u00adva that when you talk about Lit\u00adtle Lion Sound, they will know about it because they\u2019ve seen us play\u00ading for these school par\u00adties.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2be8a1202c0e269162a8f97977faa8d0\">Reg\u00adgae enthu\u00adsi\u00adast, col\u00adlec\u00adtor, DJ, sound sys\u00adtem own\u00ader \u2013 and just fin\u00adished school. So what next? Obvi\u00adous\u00adly: vis\u00adit\u00ading Jamaica. But Mom and Dad Meury put the brakes on that idea for the time being \u2013 too dan\u00adger\u00adous. The com\u00adpro\u00admise: a year abroad in New York. There, Nico\u00adlas con\u00adnects with the Jamaican com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty and with Wayne Smith. The Lit\u00adtle Lion starts earn\u00ading mon\u00adey through dub\u00adplate ses\u00adsions for Euro\u00adpean sounds. Back in Europe, tours fol\u00adlow with artists such as <a href=\"https:\/\/riddim.world\/mystaging01\">Al Camp\u00adbell<\/a>, Rank\u00ading Joe, and Wayne Smith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1629261777fc07af9bf63c21b4ab9f6b\">From the very begin\u00adning, Lit\u00adtle Lion is sup\u00adport\u00aded by the slight\u00adly old\u00ader Mr. Nico and Inspek\u00adta Der\u00adrick, aka 808 Delave\u00adga of Der\u00adrick Sound, with whom he even\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly founds the label <a href=\"https:\/\/riddim.world\/mystaging01\/tag\/evidence-music\/\">Evi\u00addence Music<\/a> in 2013. In what was ini\u00adtial\u00adly a rudi\u00admen\u00adta\u00adry but already Europe-wide rec\u00adog\u00adnized dub\u00adplate stu\u00addio in Gene\u00adva, they now begin ven\u00adtur\u00ading into their own pro\u00adduc\u00adtions as well. Their first ten\u00adta\u00adtive steps come with the debut album of the elec\u00adtro-pop duo Lip\u00adka. Evi\u00addence gains nation\u00adal recog\u00adni\u00adtion with \u201dEgo,\u201d the 2017 debut album by Swiss rap\u00adper Dan\u00adit\u00adsa, for which they receive the Swiss Music Award in both 2018 and 2022. \u201dAt first it was very eclec\u00adtic in terms of style\u201d Nico\u00adlas explains. \u201dWe first had to learn the label busi\u00adness and find our place. Nowa\u00addays, we\u2019re focus\u00ading almost exclu\u00adsive\u00adly on reg\u00adgae. We real\u00adized that for reg\u00adgae music, there was a lack of infra\u00adstruc\u00adture to sup\u00adport the devel\u00adop\u00adment of pro\u00adduc\u00aders and artists. The knowl\u00adedge we\u2019ve acquired in the main\u00adstream music busi\u00adness can now be applied to our work with reg\u00adgae artists \u2013 try\u00ading to push the whole thing to a new lev\u00adel. So far, it\u2019s quite effec\u00adtive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1dbf00f3d6fb165c79554374dfa1fbf8\">Fair to say. The label\u2019s cat\u00ada\u00adlog has since become sub\u00adstan\u00adtial, and the Gene\u00adva stu\u00addio is no longer known <em>only<\/em> for lethal dub\u00adplates, but has also built a rep\u00adu\u00adta\u00adtion for heavy\u00adweight pro\u00adduc\u00adtions. Asked which expe\u00adri\u00adences linger the longest, Nico\u00adlas doesn\u2019t hes\u00adi\u00adtate: \u201dOne time <a href=\"https:\/\/riddim.world\/mystaging01\">Siz\u00adzla<\/a> came in with his entire entourage. We had the Trinidad embassy in the stu\u00addio and the Jamaican one. When he stepped into the stu\u00addio, there were lots of sound\u00admen who were wait\u00ading for some dubs. But he said, \u2019No man, the first thing I want to do is just bless the place and just give you one track.\u2019 And we record\u00aded one song for the label, for Evi\u00addence Music. Years ago, Nico\u00adlas began record\u00ading the ses\u00adsions not just with a micro\u00adphone but also on cam\u00adera, \u201dorig\u00adi\u00adnal\u00adly as proof for the oth\u00ader sounds to show that I had a direct con\u00adnec\u00adtion with the artists. After I real\u00adiz\u00ading the plat\u00adform we were build\u00ading with those videos, it was also good to high\u00adlight the work that we were doing with some local artists.\u201d Those video dub\u00adplates evolved from exclu\u00adsive art\u00adworks into pro\u00admo\u00adtion\u00adal tools \u2013 both for in-house pro\u00adduc\u00adtions and for young, up-and-com\u00ading artists. Today, Nico\u00adlas no longer needs to approach artists and ask for col\u00adlab\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtions; the offers pile up, and close part\u00adner\u00adships with artists such as Broth\u00ader Cul\u00adture, <a href=\"https:\/\/riddim.world\/mystaging01\">Rank\u00ading Joe<\/a>, Queen Omega, Eesah, or Mic\u00adah She\u00adma\u00adiah are firm\u00adly estab\u00adlished. The stu\u00addio in Gene\u00adva has estab\u00adlished itself as a reg\u00adu\u00adlar stop on many artists\u2019 Euro\u00adpean tours, and a dub\u00adplate for Lit\u00adtle Lion is always on the cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0e25b853a6f5077ffbf155d0a7af09d8\">Some sound boys took offense to what they per\u00adceived as the repur\u00adpos\u00ading of their favorite art form into an inclu\u00adsive entry point to the scene: \u201dWhen we start\u00aded record\u00ading and pub\u00adlish\u00ading the dub\u00adplate videos, some were fight\u00ading against us. Peo\u00adple said dub\u00adplates had to be exclu\u00adsive, that you should only hear them in a dance. But at the end of the day, for me, when you\u2019re mak\u00ading music, you want to touch as many peo\u00adple as you can. Soci\u00adety has evolved \u2013 just like the tools we have at our dis\u00adpos\u00adal to push the music and the mes\u00adsage. If we can find vec\u00adtors and ways to reach a wider crowd, then let\u2019s use them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\">\n\n\n\n<figure
