CHIEMSEE COMEBACK

Some festivals leave memories. Others make history. For an entire generation of reggae fans, sound system enthusiasts, and festival nomads, the Chiemsee Reggae Summer was exactly that kind of place. A place for days by the water, dusty dance floors, legendary performances, and those magical weekends that people still talk about long afterward.

So the news was all the more exciting: After nearly ten years, the Chiemsee Reggae Summer is returning in 2026. From June 26 to 28, Übersee at Lake Chiemsee will once again become the gathering place for the European reggae community. And the response shows just how much this festival has been missed: The weekend is nearly sold out; day tickets are currently only available for Sunday.

Anyone who’s seen the atmospheric trailer for the comeback understands what it’s all about. It’s not just about nostalgia. It’s not just another revival. It’s about the return of a way of life. The preview showcases exactly the images that many visitors still associate with Chiemsee: sunsets over the lake, happy people in camping chairs, echoes of dub music in the night, bare feet in the grass, and that indescribable feeling of summer freedom.

For many, the Chiemsee Reggae Summer marks the official start of summer. Friendships were forged here, sound system crews came together, and first festival romances began somewhere between the campground and the main stage. For many years, the festival has connected reggae, dancehall, and sound system culture across a wide variety of scenes.

The lineup thus bridges the genre’s past and present. Headlining the festival is Marteria, one of the most influential voices in German-speaking festival culture, alongside a diverse selection of reggae and dancehall heavyweights from Jamaica and beyond.

While fans were originally looking forward to a performance by Capleton, the Jamaican icon unfortunately had to cancel his appearance due to visa issues. Stepping in at short notice is none other than Mr. Vegas – a true dancehall legend whose catalog includes international hits such as ”Heads High,” ”Bruk It Down,” and ”Pull Up.” Known for his infectious stage presence, crowd-moving energy, and anthems that have soundtracked dancefloors around the world for decades, Mr. Vegas brings exactly the kind of Caribbean vibes and festival spirit that make the Chiemsee Reggae Summer so special.

Joining them are other top-tier acts such as Burning Spear, Ky-Mani Marley, Anthony B, Lila Iké, Patrice, Macka B, Spice, Don Letts, and Neville Staple – a lineup that embodies roots tradition, dancehall energy, and global bass culture. It is precisely this openness that has always been part of Chiemsee’s DNA: Here, conscious reggae, hip-hop, dub, ska, and modern festival sounds have always coexisted naturally side by side.

And, of course, there’s the setting itself. A dip in the water during the day, a cold beer against the backdrop of the Alps in the evening, and deep basslines under the open sky at night – all complemented by that laid-back Bavarian hospitality that has always given the festival its special character.

Anyone who’s ever been here knows why this festival hasn’t lost any of its legendary status, even after a decade-long hiatus. Perhaps that’s precisely the secret behind this comeback: Some festivals make a comeback. Others feel as if they’d never really been gone.
